‘The Bubble Boy’

“We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth. We are creating a world where anyone, anywhere may express his or her beliefs, no matter how singular, without fear of being coerced into silence or conformity”

Today, in this network, we as users are all nodes – everyone is equal. We no longer need to imagine a future like this because it is already here. “There’s no elected government, or legal concepts of property, expression, identity and movement” – each individual has as much control as the next, with the power to share and communicate anything they choose from our own personal bubbles. For example, all of us enrolled in BCM206 who post content on our blogs know how easy it is to just type up anything we wish from the comfort of our own homes and with the click of a button, publish it online. It is no longer just gatekeepers who can monitor and share information, we all have access no matter how insignificant and small we feel in within network. We are no longer being defined as a mass of users, but individual produsers as we both consume and produce content.

  1. It seems that we now live in a world where “The Little Man” or the average human, is no longer just a mindless sheep, being broadcast to constantly by the larger corporations, but rather, leads the pack as a “Produser” as Axel Bruns puts it. (https://ourworldindata.org/internet#growth-of-the-internet) These Produsers are those individuals who produce their own content, just for the sake of being able to. Unlike those that produce finished products, the works of the Produser “are inherently incomplete, always evolving, modular, networked, and never finished”. Produsers are constantly in a feedback loop, with messages bouncing from User to User, like neurons in a brain. Feel free to check out my post for my take on the “Produser”!
