‘The Truth’

Today we are faced with the question of ‘how can we establish the credibility of a source in a time where everyone has the ability to distribute content?’

My remediation this week demonstrates how simple it is for anyone to create content and share it online. Although this tweet would not be taken seriously by those who know me, it’s a light-hearted example of how users can easily share fake news online.


A gatekeeper is a person who controls the access to something and this term usually comes up in legacy media, however when we are looking at emergent media and specifically social media, we are interacting more with user-led content creation which means our information is coming from anyone who chooses to distribute information.

It is constantly becoming more difficult to determine whether a source is credible or not, however there a number of ways to help us decipher this, such as it’s currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose which is discussed further in an Evaluating Resources article.

  1. I really like the way in which you’ve presented #fakenews in a more light-hearted tone, the way in which a society can perceive fake news these days is really scary and for good reason. However, #fakenews can also be used for light-hearted humour as you have displayed in your post. You explored a little into the ways in which #fakenews can be presented in a lighter manner and I would have loved to hear about it a little more! I think the concept of #fakenews will always have a very negative connotation around it because it is in fact false news, but I think as much as it is important to focus on the negatives and bring awareness to it, it’s also important to shine a light on the positives.   2. First of all, I just saw your Ins, and WOW, your work is fantastic! (and thank you for following me back)

    I agree with you that it is now much hard to judge the credibility of other users’ posts on social media. There is always a group of ‘forever-teenagers’ trying to be funny on some serious topics. When you saw a lot of lies, it is just harder to believe the truth.

    I would love to know your opinion on big YouTubers making that sponsored videos. What kind of aspects will make you buy their words?
